  • What is Breast Lift?

Breast lift (mastopexy) is a cosmetic surgical procedure by which the sagging breast could be reshaped and raised. It is known that a small sagging breast can give good cosmetic results after a breast lift but breasts of any size can be lifted.
  • Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?

The candidate for breast lift like any other cosmetic surgery should be physically healthy emotionally stable with realistic and achievable expectations. Breast lift candidates ideally should have a small sagging breast but breasts of any size and shape can be lifted however if you are planning on having more children it is a good idea to postpone your breast lift cosmetic operation because of the effect of pregnancy on the breasts.  However, there are special risks for future pregnancies  or breast feeding after breast lift.
  • How can you prepare for your breast lift cosmetic surgery?

There are number of steps you can take to reduce risks of your breast lift operation and speed up your healing process and recovery from the breast lifting operation. Depends on your circumstances we might arrange some blood test.
It is known that smoking increase the risk of operation and retards wound healing therefore it is best to stop smoking at least two weeks before the breast lift operation. Certain drugs such as aspirin and some other painkillers thinner blood and promote extensive bruising and bleeding therefore it is best to substitute them with paracetamol a few days (preferably a week) before the breast lift operation. For the same reason some other medication might also cause problem and interfere with other medications and complicate the post operative period. In addition, there are some evidence that certain herbal remedies could be dangerous to surgical patients and all herbal/haemopatic medication should be discontinued at least two weeks before your breast lift operation. If you are going to have local sedation apart from local anaesthetic medications, then you must not eat or drink anything for at least six hours before your breast lift operation.
Some people take vitamin E, vitamin C, multi vitamins and arnica preparations. If you are interested in using some such over the counter remedies please discuss the matter with your cosmetic surgeon.
  • How is breast lift cosmetic surgery carried out?

There are several techniques of surgery for cosmetic breast lifts depending on the size, shape and sagging of the breast. Breast lift is almost accompanied by some degree of excess skin removal around the nipple area of the breast.  In many cases the breast gland needs to be reshaped and lifted. Breast lift can be accompanied by insertion of implants and the aim is to elevate the nipple and its surrounding areola area to a more youthful position.
  • What the main types of breast lift?

Doughnut breast lift for a small breast with a slight sagging. In doughnut breast lift a concentric circle of skin around the areola (doughnut shaped) is removed and then depending on the breast the breast can be reshaped and finally the skin is closed by stitches.  Anchor shaped (v-shaped) breast lift is for larger breasts with severe sagging and dropping. In anchor shaped breast lift excess skin and extra breast tissue needs to be removed and involves more extensive surgery. There size of scar is larger and the risks involved are higher and recovery is more prolonged compared with doughnut breast lift.
  • What are the advantages of breast lift?

The aim of breast lift is to have firmer and better shaped breasts which look good under clothes. Many people no longer feel uncomfortable when they wear a bra.
  • Does breast lift hurt?

The breast lift operation is carried out under local aesthetic with or without sedation depending on the size of the breast and each individual patient. The breast might be painful for about two days and then slowly the pain sensation will go, but swelling, bruising and tenderness might take longer.

How long does breast lift surgery take?

The duration of the operation depends on several factors as there are different sizes of breasts and the technique which has been used for the breast lift and if the implant is also being used the operation can last up to four to five hours.
  • How long does it take to see the breast lift results?

Immediately after the breast lift operation you will notice the change in the shape of the breast.  You will need to wear a support bra for about two months after your operation to help reshape your breasts and a smooth recovery period.
  • What can I do after my breast lift operation to speed my recovery and obtain better results?

Some pain and discomfort are common in the first 24 hours you can walk around the house but it is best to avoid strenuous activity and lifting anything more than 3kg in weight during it is recommended that you should drink at least 6 glasses of water in addition to tea, coffee and soft drinks during the first 3 days after your operation as alcohol opens up veins and might cause bleeding or extensive bruising it is best to be avoided for several days particularly if you are taking any other medications we advise against driving during the first two days after your breast lift operation if you had sedation. Before leaving our clinic we will inform you about your next appointment following your surgery which should be about a week post operatively the same period of time as it may lead extensive bruising and bleeding. You can slowly increase your activity during the following two weeks but you should not raise your arm up or reach your back for 3 weeks. We also recommend that you should avoid some sport such as tennis and other racquetball games, bowling, ice skating and any form of skiing for about 3 months.
  • What are the main side-effects of breast lift?

However, there are a number of relatively rare complications which you need to be aware of, such as discomfort, pain, swelling, bruising, bleeding, haematoma, opening of the wound, black and blue bruising, asymmetry of the breasts, increase or decrease or loss of nipple sensation, inability to breastfeed in the future, mammogram changes, skin loss (necrosis) and loss of nipple tissue, dog ears, allergic reaction, blood clots and abscess.
